About the Artist
Julie Kommer is a Northern Virginia-based artist who translates fifteen years of design experience in landscape architecture and urban planning into vibrant acrylic and watercolor paintings. Julie has always had a creative streak, from crafting as a child to photography, watercolor painting, and graphic design as a teenager. Pursuing a career in landscape architecture, Julie enjoyed combining her artistic, technical, and plant-loving sides all in one place. In the background of her career, she occasionally experimented with painting as a hobby, building skills and trying new media and techniques. After working as a landscape architect and urban planner for 15 years, Julie stepped back from her career to stay home and take care of her small children in 2022. Motherhood created its own need for a creative outlet, and Julie began her art business, Julie Kommer Handmade Art, in 2023.
Working primarily in acrylics and watercolor, Julie draws from a career-long archive of photography to inspire her painting subjects and palettes. Her background in design informs her approach to landscapes, cityscapes, botanicals, and fun prints for children’s rooms. Since launching her studio, Julie has specialized in original works, prints, and commissions that reflect both her technical design background and her intuitive love for color and nature.
